Tropical Polynesian Productions Offers Polynesian Dance Seminars And Educational Programs

Kalena founded the Golston Polynesian Dance Company in 2001 and Tropical Polynesian Productions in 2007.  Major performances include the Home Builders Show, Ann Arbor Street Art Fair, Sunday Ann Arbor Artisan’s Market, Gilda’s Club, Detroit Festival for the Arts, Detroit Princess Riverboat and Phoenix State Fair.  They frequently collaborate with their sister halau (hula school) Napua O’ Polynesia, in Providence, RI.  They are known for its energetic and upbeat dances.

Kalena teaches the following 4-week classes, as well as 1- or 2-day seminars: Hawaiian (Ancient and Modern), Tahitian, Fijian, Tongan, Maori New Zealand, and Samoan.  In addition to dance classes, she conducts Tahitian drumming and Samoan fire/knife dance seminars.  Polynesian dance is for all ages, men, women, and children.  She welcomes all shapes and sizes to participate and performance opportunities are available.

Dance performances are throughout the year.  In addition, some students accompany the instructors to perform at professional events and are invited to join the dance company.  They are available for private parties, wedding receptions, corporate functions, any occasion.

Kalena says, “When you become part of my halau (Hula School), you become ohana (family).  We get together for social functions outside of dance, such as dinner, shopping, etc”. Other benefits from Polynesian dance is that it builds self esteem, improves social skills, helps overcome stage fright, improves your coordination, excellent for burning fat and calories.  You can burn over 100 calories in 30 minutes learning Polynesian dance.  It also helps exercise the mind by memorizing the words, music and dance routine.

Tropical Polynesian Productions’ mission has always been “Keeping It Alive and Passing It On”.  It is Kalena’s desire to continue to perpetuate Polynesian culture through events, educational programs, classes, and seminars.

Kalena has taught at Marygrove College—Institute of Music and Dance and at the City of Farmington Hills—Cultural Division.  She has taught at the YMCA, East Detroit Adult Education

and has been a guest instructor at Oakland University in Rochester Hills, MI.  She is available to teach seminars and educational programs.  Kalena also visits shelters, women and children who are victims of abuse.

Polynesian dance classes are ongoing and  are taught in 4-week sessions on Thursday evenings, 7:30 PM to 8:30 PM, at the Academy of Classical Ballet, 21501 N. 78th Ave, Ste 100, Peoria, AZ 85382.
